Aeroacoustics Engineer

We are currently seeking an Aeroacoustics Engineer to support a variety of programs being developed in the Advanced Vehicle Research Division.  Working closely with aerodynamic and structural analysts, the Aeroacoustics Engineer will provide preliminary and detailed acoustic analysis of proposed novel aircraft designs with the intention of minimizing ground noise footprint.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Operate simulation tools, and/or advise others in the acoustics relevant operation of those tools, that produce acoustics data (e.g., CHARM)
  • Perform acoustic analyses (source data coming from either simulation or experiment) on aircraft systems and components, including building analysis tools and scripts.
  • Develop testing plans for technology development and verification of a design
  • Implement testing plans and perform data reduction to verify analysis performance predictions
  • Present detailed data and design recommendations based on findings
  • You will likely be attempting to solve problems that are poorly defined by the stakeholders (customers). You must be able to think creatively and independently about how to turn vague inputs into executable projects

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Acoustics Engineering with 0-3 years of applicable experience or Bachelor’s degree with 2-5 years of applicable experience
  • Experience with aeroacoustics (e.g., airframe noise, propeller acoustics) and the relationships to aerodynamic acoustic analogies
  • Strong knowledge of  structural dynamics and an understanding of how motion of mechanical systems turns into radiated noise
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills
  • Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident      

Highly Desired Experience:

  • PhD in Electrical, Mechanical, or Acoustics Engineering
  • Experience with computational acoustic analysis techniques, with a strong preference for experience with ANOPP (or ANOPP2), PSU WOP-WOP, CHARM, or StarCCM+
  • Experience in validation of analysis results against other sources, such as test data, previously published literature, and theoretical source models
  • Acoustic and vibration measurement skills, are fluent in data analysis methodology, and have experience making measurements in anechoic/hemi-anechoic chambers/tunnels.
  • Experience with testing standards, instrumentation, signal conditioning, verifying boundary & environmental conditions 

Desired Experience:

  • Experience with computational fluid dynamics (CFD), finite element analysis (FEM/BEM), statistical energy analysis (SEA), and/or acoustic ray tracing methods
  • Understanding of acoustic  treatment packages
  • Familiarity with standard CAD packages (e.g. Solidworks or Catia)
  • Familiarity with psychoacoustics and emerging research in perception modeling

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to support travel
